Help Fund Senior Programs in Your Parents' Names

ATLANTA (May 4, 2012) – Right in time for Mother’s Day, area residents are invited to honor their own mother or father by donating in their names. This month, Senior Connections is launching “40 Days of Giving”, a 40-day campaign that aims to raise $40,000 for the non-profit’s senior services, including its 3,000 meals per day Meals On Wheels program.

“It is a splendid way to honor and say ‘thank you’ to your parents,” says Debra Furtado, Chief Executive Officer of the 39-year old organization, a leading agency of senior services in metro-Atlanta and beyond.

“Too many seniors living in the region do not have children who are looking out for them, or they may even be raising grandchildren and great-grandchildren on a very limited budget. According to the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC), more than 20% of seniors throughout the metro Atlanta area live on less than $15,000 per year. As a state, Georgia is ranked as the 7^th worst for seniors living with the threat of hunger.

“So, for 40 days, from May 9 (Senior Wednesday) through Father’s Day on June 17, Senior Connections wants to raise $1,000 each day, $40,000 total, through online and mailed-in donations. That’s just 40 donations of $25 per day. Do it in honor of your own parents (or grandparents!) – make ‘em proud!”

$25 buys a week’s worth of meals, delivered to a senior’s door. Or, $25 can cover more than an hour of in-home care for an older adult who needs just a little help to stay and live safely in his or her home. Combined with other donations, it can help weatherize a house, replace a water heater or repair a roof. It can also defray the costs of health fairs and exercise classes organized by Senior Connections to keep seniors alert and active.

“Please help us combat hunger for area seniors by raising $40,000 in 40 days,” invites Furtado. “Together, we can reach this goal!”
